THE 2008 MISSISSAUGA AND SOUTH CENTRAL BODYBUILDING AND FIGURE CHAMPIONSHIPS
One of the most anticipated local shows that takes place in Ontario has been the Mississauga and South Central Bodybuilding and Figure Championships that took place at Port Credit High School last Saturday. Run by Pro bodybuilder and trainer Laura Binetti and Vice-President and former Pro bodybuilder Melanie Horton, the local level one and two show has parlayed itself into being a must see for fans as the show attracts one of the largest amount of competitors and is an opportunity for athletes to qualify to compete at Ontario’s highest level of competition.
Celebrating their tenth anniversary, the event was dressed in formal Oscar looking touches such as a canopy entrance with elegantly dressed girls handing out programs to a red carpet walkway leading to the theatre. To introduce the evening of events, the night began with a video presentation highlighting many wonderful past moments in previous years as well as seeing some of the amazing athletes that have graced their stage in the past. (You may view this presentation video on our home page)
Hosted by Christina Cherneskey (CFRB 1010 radio) the format of the show was nicely laid out with the first portion of the evening for bodybuilding and the second for figure thereby allowing fans to sit for the portion of the show they paid to see and mingle in the lobby at sponsor booths when they desired to skip a category. Pleasant banter between Cherneskey and head judge Rudy Jambrosic made the night run smooth as Chernesky chose to position herself as if she was an audience member who has little knowledge attending a competition by asking questions and allowing Jambrosic to be the informant.
Bodybuilding
Level one women bodybuilding began the evening with an open class of three women with Samantha Haralampous taking first place. Samantha blew the competition away with her balance of feminine symmetry and tight toned body! She seemed exceptionally happy and proud to have won her class. Second place winner Michelle Ward had great mass yet lacked the necessary conditioning this time around.
Light weight men had two competitors with Sean Stephans sporting a physique that would look good on the cover of Exercise For Men magazine. His developed lats and back was his advantage over second place winner Alexander Marin who lacked the legs and back to win first.
Middle weight men was an interesting class as there were many different types of physiques out of the six competing with the top three all being very unique. Returning after two years was third place winner Colin Bottoset with an almost over powering full chest as well as good muscle maturity and massive triceps. Second place winner Matt Crow definitely had the perfect package to win the class as he never looked better with his hard conditioning, great back and incredible legs and calves. However, it seems the judges were swayed more by first place winner Andrew Baklan’s strong presence and ability to confidently bring attention to his best features covering up the fact that his legs and arms didn’t stack up to Crow’s or Bottoset’s by far. Some may have been scratching their heads on that one.
When it came to the seven light heavy men competing, the winner was more clear cut with Rick Rotchild displaying a hard as nails body enhanced with great bicep peaks, sweeping lats, striated quads packaged together in an impressive routine for the audience’s enjoyment. Jimmy Pasher was a formidable second place competitor with a great physique that was almost equal to third place winner Steve Mahoney as both men presented very balanced and esthetically pleasing physiques.
The heavy weight men are always a crowd pleaser with six men competing for the impressive weight class title. Both third place winner Kip Brown and second place Sebastian Naskarent impressed everyone with mass and equal symmetry although Naskarent conditioning was slightly better than Brown’s. But the meat of the show came when the audience was treated to first place winner Christopher White who presented a complete package of incredible thickness of frame complimented with huge delts, v shape lats, thick legs and perfect glutes. When it came time for the overall category, White shined and proved that he was on another level and confidently did the damage he needed to do winning the coveted title. The natural symmetry of White is typical of the great athletic genetics many people of black origin have been blessed with and he could certainly go a long way in this sport!
FIGURE
The ever growing figure competition for level one began with seven competitors and when the top three were announced, it appeared to be a very close call when all three ladies chosen sported very similar physiques that displayed a nice balance of leanness and slight tone. Jennifer Saccoccia placed first against Chantal Milot (second) and Tammy Knox (third) to represent what the fit body looks like for the women of today.
The figure medium class had Dalon Slack placing first winning over Jolene Fonseba who appeared to be the hardest and most developed muscularity wise of the three girls. But as figure is a balance of both tone and muscle without one over shadowing the other, Fonseba was awarded second place. The lovely and full figure Mary Tran placed a respectable third place as well.
Figure medium tall was a light class with only two competitors as Natalie Wintels grabbed first place with her very tight and perfectly balanced athletic look leaving Vivian Guerreiro-Kehoe winning second place.
Eight women competed for the tall class this year and even though third place winner Michelle Hahn looked in perfect condition and second place winner Millicent Prince displayed a more thicker, muscular build, the first place position was taken by Jackie Dean. Again it seemed the judges were really critical in choosing the perfect blend of fitness, muscularity and symmetry in all the girls this year and have been successful in keeping to the standard they have been promoting for the figure girls.
Coming soon: Part 2 when we review the South Central level two division.
